Lower Elementary (1st - 3rd Grade)

Inspiring Curiosity Through Discovery and Imagination

This is a time when children begin to ask profound questions about the world: how things work, why events happen, and what connects everything together.

In our multiage Montessori classrooms, children explore mathematics, language, biology, geography, and history through engaging, hands-on lessons that awaken imagination and build lasting understanding.

Skills Learned:

  • Fluent reading, grammar, and creative writing through literature-based exploration
  • Independence and organization through self-directed learning and time management
  • Research and presentation skills that develop confidence in communication and leadership
  • Grace, courtesy, and conflict resolution through collaborative community experiences
  • Geography, history, and cultural studies that connect children to humanity and the natural world
  • Scientific observation and experimentation through biology, earth science, and physics studies
  • Foundational mathematics and geometry using concrete materials to guide abstract reasoning

Did You Know?

The Lower Elementary years mark the beginning of what Dr. Montessori called the reasoning mind. Children in this stage no longer simply absorb information; they seek to understand cause and effect, relationships, and purpose. Montessori’s Five Great Lessons, including stories of the universe, life, humans, language, and numbers, serve as the spark that ignites a lifetime of inquiry and fascination. Each lesson opens the door to interconnected studies, encouraging children to explore their world with wonder and purpose.

Guides

Our Guides nurture each child’s growing curiosity by providing individualized lessons that follow their natural interests. They serve as storytellers, scientists, historians, and mentors, helping children make connections across disciplines while cultivating independence, self-confidence, and empathy. The Guide’s role is to inspire, challenge, and support the child’s journey toward mastery and responsibility.

Lower Elementary Milestones

As children transition from the Primary environment, Guides observe readiness markers such as fluent reading, curiosity about big-picture questions, an emerging ability to work collaboratively, and a growing sense of fairness and justice. By the end of Lower Elementary, children have developed strong foundational skills in math, reading, and scientific reasoning along with an excitement for learning that fuels their transition into the Upper Elementary experience, where deeper intellectual exploration awaits.

Our Lower Elementary Program, serving children ages 6 to 9, builds upon the foundation of independence and curiosity developed in the Primary Environment.
